Founded in 1990, Ageas NV is one of Belgium’s largest insurance companies. Previously known as Fortis Holding, Ageas operates in over 10 countries, including China, France, Italy, Malaysia, Portugal, Turkey, and the UK. The company sells most of its insurance services via brokers, agents and branches of BNP Paribas. Ageas provides several types of insurance, including travel and car, either directly or through its subsidiaries. The company has expanded its insurance offering by making several key acquisitions, including Groupama’s UK insurance division in 2012 and AXA’s Portuguese insurance operations in 2016.
Ageas is traded under the ticker symbol AGS. The company stock is listed on the Euronext Brussels, the largest stock exchange in Europe.
Ageas can trace its roots back to 1824, with the founding of Assurances Générales, a Belgian life insurance company. In 1990, Assurances Générales acquired the Dutch firm AMEV/VSB, merging the two companies and changing its name to Fortis. AMEV/VSB was originally started back in 1920, in the Dutch town of Utrecht.
