InterDigital Inc. is a technology research and development company that primarily provides wireless and video technologies for mobile devices, networks, and services worldwide. InterDigital was originally founded by Seligsohn Sherwin in 1972. The company took on its current form in 1992, when two major wireless technologies (wireless communication and video communication) were brought together under one brand to form one of the largest research, innovation, and licensing companies in the world. InterDigital has its headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware.
The firm’s technologies are used in global digital cellular and wireless products and networks, including 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, and InterDigital has made more than 5,000 contributions to key global standards over the last 20 years. The company’s contributions to video technology are also impressive, and in 2019, InterDigital acquired industry leader Technicolor’s R&I Unit, creating one of the largest long-term R&D and licencing companies in the world.
